Becoming a helicopter pilot is a very rewarding challenge! This is the best time to get started on a career as a commercial helicopter pilot.

Some good reasons why you should think about an exciting and rewarding career as a pilot in the helicopter industry.

Worldwide shortage of helicopter pilots.

The FAA expect demand for helicopter pilots will increase 13% over the next 10 years.

Rotorcraft fleet size will also increase to meet demand.

Decrease in the number of commercial pilots over the last 13 years.

50% increase in commercial helicopter pilot pay in the last 13 years.

There are two paths you can take to get started as a Pilot in this industry. One way is to join the military and get them to train you for free. The military have been cutting back on their flight programs making it difficult to get your foot in the door and they require a certain number of years commitment from you.

The other, and most common route these days is, enrolling in a civilian helicopter flight training program and financing it yourself. First, find a helicopter flight school, complete their training course to commercial and CFI (certified flight instructor) level. Once your at this level (approx 200hrs)you can now work as a flight instructor and begin teaching others to fly in order to build your flight time and gain practical experience.

This period of your career is what's known as paying your dues and will normally last one to two years before you move on to bigger and better things. You will need to reach around one thousand hours of helicopter flight time before most, if not all commercial helicopter companies will employ you, and most of these will also require an instrument rating.

Some questions you are probably asking yourself.
